George Leo Winger, formerly of 661 Buhl Blvd Sharon passed away peacefully on Thursday morning November 3, 2016 at Lake Vista of Cortland, OH following a period of declining health.  He was ninety-seven years old.

Leo was born in New Wilmington, PA on June 28, 1919 the son of Harry and Marian (Magee) Winger.  He was a graduate of Hickory High School and went on to marry his sweetheart the former Irene Richards in January of 1940.  

Leo served Our Country in the United States Army during World War II and following his discharge returned to the Shenango Valley to begin what would go on to become forty-nine year career in the steel castings industry. He started sweeping floors in the shop at the former National Malleable and Steel Castings which became National Castings, and through his hard work and dedication he worked his way up to become the vice-president of the Midland Ross Corp. and president of its subsidiary Metal Products Group before his retirement. 

He was tremendously dedicated to his community, and through the years he served on various boards of directors including the Salvation Army, McDowell Bank, Pennsylvania Economy League, Sharon General Hospital, Alumni Association of Youngstown State University where he was also a member of the Endowment Scholarship Committee; trustee of the Youngstown Foundation; Steel Founders Society of America, American Foundrymen’s Association and the Railway Progress Institute.  Leo was honored as the “Outstanding Young Man of the Year” by the Shenango Valley Jaycees in 1950 and was the Buhl Day honoree in 1989. 

He was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon where he had served as a deacon and trustee.  Beginning in 1934, Leo began his lifelong membership to what was then known as the F.H. Buhl Club and through the years he served on its board in various positions.  In his younger years he also was an avid hunter, fisherman, and participated in various sports.

Leo leaves behind his children James L. Winger and his wife Jean of Howland, OH, Lani J. Wood and her husband Timothy of Bay Village, OH, and Mark T. Winger and his wife Susan of Florida; six grandchildren Kimberly DePietro, Amanda Stabley, David Wood, Heather Baker, Dustin Winger, and Brandon Winger; and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Winger was preceded in death by parents and his wife of more than seventy years Irene on April 8, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00PM on Monday at the Sample-O'Donnell Funeral Home at 555 East State Street in Sharon, PA with Rev. Dr. Glenn M. Hink officiating.  Friends may call one hour prior to the start of the services.

Burial will take place at America’s Cemetery in Hermitage.
