YOUNGSTOWN-Adelaide Szabo formerly of Sharon passed away peacefully on the morning of April 14, 2016 following a period of declining health. She was three months shy of her hundredth birthday.
Adelaide was born in Youngstown, OH on July 27, 1916 eldest of four children of the late Joseph N. and Emma (Eidelman) Pincus.
She was a 1933 graduate of South High School in Youngstown and went on to marry her sweetheart Frank J. Szabo on January 1, 1940. Together they would go on to own and operate Szabo’s Jewelry in downtown Sharon where they served generations of families and would deeply value their relationships with customer friends of the Shenango Valley for more than seventy years.
Mrs. Szabo was a devoted member of the former Temple Beth Israel in Sharon and the former B’Nai Zion Temple in Farrell. She was a member of the Temple Sisterhood, Hadassah, and taught both Hebrew School and Sunday School. Adelaide also was fluent in Yiddish and helped to translate countless family heritage documents for individuals around the country.
A talented and award-winning cook, baker and confectioner, her family will remember her for the dinners, and parties she hosted for friends and the countless handmade meals and baked goods she gave to whoever was in need in the community. Her family will always be grateful for her passion for antiques, classical music, opera, and art which she brought to their lives. Mrs. Szabo had a gusto for living life, she was upbeat and had a great sense of humor. She was an adept solver and devoted fan of crossword puzzles even into her late 90’s. Business woman, daughter, sister, cousin, mother, aunt, active Temple member, and giver to her entire community of all these achievements and attributes, her family will appreciate and continue to learn from the example she set in how she treated other people. A true extrovert, Mrs. Szabo was keenly interested in meeting new people and hearing about the lives of families, friends, and customer friends. She cried with them during hard times and laughed with them during good times. Throughout her life, she continued to believe, and often said that ensuring and facilitating the happiness of her family (particularly her sons!) was her primary goal in life.
She will be sadly missed by her sons Dr. Charles Szabo M.D. and his wife Laila of Mill Valley, CA and Richard Szabo and his wife Rae of Alexandria, VA; her four grandchildren Daniel, Elana, Claire, and Jenna Szabo; and by her many nieces and nephews.
Adelaide was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than sixty-nine years Frank on June 2, 2009; her brother Jerome Pincus; and by her sisters Cecile “Pinky” Erlich and Shirley Wolk.
Funeral services for Mrs. Szabo will be held on Friday April 15, 2016 beginning at 12:30PM at the Sample-O’Donnell Funeral Home 555 East State Street in Sharon, PA 16146 with Rabbi Franklin W. Muller D.D. of Congregation Rodef Sholom officiating.
Burial will take place next to her husband at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery in Hermitage, PA.
