John Demchak 94, a longtime resident of Hermitage, PA and more recently Gainsville, VA passed away on Friday morning September 4, 2015 at Adler Caring Center in Aldie, Virginia following a period of declining health.
He was born in Philipsburg, PA on February 3, 1921 the second oldest of eleven children born to George and Mary (Lucak) Demchak. John was a graduate of Philipsburg High School and went on to serve our country in the United States Army during World War II as a Sergeant with the 87th Chemical Mortar Battalion. He
Following his honorable discharge and return from the war, John would marry his sweetheart Margaret E. Nemeth on August 26, 1945 and would go onto spend over sixty-two years together. John worked for the former G.A.T.X. at plant #2 in Masury for thirty-eight years as a fabricator and machinist. During his time there he also served as the treasurer of the United Steel Workers Union Local #2318 for twenty-five years.
John loved sports and was an avid golfer in leagues at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course. He also loved cheering on the Steelers, Pirates, and Penn State teams whenever possible. He was a member of Hickory V.F.W. Post 6166 and had served as an Elder at the former Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Sharon.
John leaves behind his son Robert G. Demchak and his wife Mary of Gainesville, VA; his daughter Jan L. Dickerson and her fiancée Don Horan of Fairfax Station, VA; two grandsons Justin and Joseph Demchak; six brothers Joseph Demchak of Philipsburg, PA, Eugene Demchak of North Ridgeville, OH, Steve Demchak of Clearfield, PA. Michael Demchak of Philipsburg, PA, Samuel Demchak of Alliance, OH, and Carl Demchak of Philipsburg, PA; his sister Suzanne Demchak of Mechanicsburg, PA; and by his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret on November 16, 2007, his brothers George and Ted Demchak, sister Christine Demchak, son-in-law Gary Dickerson, and by an infant son.
A funeral service will begin at 11:00AM on Thursday September 10, 2015 at the Sample-O’Donnell Funeral Home 555 East State Street Sharon, PA 16146 with Rev. Dr. Glenn M .Hink of the First Presbyterian Church of Sharon Officiating.
Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery where military honors will be observed.
